Cell Culuturing

defined cell culture media often include:
nutrients - 12 essential amino acids, vitamins, FFA, glucose,
serum (contains protein growth factors as insulin, transferrin, erythropoietin, & interlukin-2)

methods of culturing animal cells generally require a solid surface (plastic/glass Petri dish)
so that cell adhesion molecules and extra cell matrix can attach to solid surface

fibroblasts are cells of connective tissue and readily grow in culture

1st human cells culture were uterine carcinoma cells (HeLa cells - 1952)

most cultures cells divide finite number of times (about 50) before they senesce
